Reducing our energy consumption and the CO2 emissions generated is a top priority as far as we are concerned. We are able to achieve particularly effective savings in the network area.
The objective of the global climate protection strategy being pursued by Telefónica SA is to bring about a significant reduction in energy consumption by 2015 compared with the levels in 2007. The levels in our network are projected to come down by 30 percent and the energy consumption per employee by ten percent. Telefónica O2 Germany is supporting these targets by implementing appropriate reduction measures in Germany. We are working on a CO2 and energy reduction concept for implementation of this climate strategy in Germany.

The coming year also looks set to see the first measures to be implemented in the company's vehicle fleet and travel management within the framework of this climate strategy.
The lion's share of electricity consumption by O2 amounts to 89 percent and this is attributable to our network with 27,376 mobile phone base stations and other network equipment.

Phoning cuts down travel
Business trips are a huge source of indirect CO2 emissions. Our travel cost guideline therefore includes a requirement for all employees to review any travel arrangements they are planning, in order to assess whether the trip can be replaced by an audio, video or web conference. This recommendation has been a success. In 2009, the number of our telephone, video and web conferences has continued to rise: our employees spent 46,526 hours (2008: 30,000 hours) in virtual conferences. However, although these replaced some of our journeys, the number of kilometres covered on business trips actually increased last year.

Overall, our employees travelled a total of 27,785,785 million kilometres using non-company forms of transport (2008: 22 million) in 2009. The number of kilometres travelled by plane increased to 12,292,551 km (2008: 11,991,956). Hire cars accounted for 13,468,866 kilometres (2008: 8,688,099) and trains for 2,024,367 km (2008: 1,550,813 km)
If travel is unavoidable, we structure the journeys to be as climate friendly as possible. When leasing company cars, we opt for models that have low CO2 emissions and fuel-efficient engines. We also offer our employees subsidies to help with the cost of travel if they go to work by bus or train. We are currently developing a concept to reduce the emissions generated by our vehicle fleet and this defines annual reduction targets up to 2015.
