Large cities are faced with constantly increasing pollution. But before cities can take specific measures against this problem, they first have to know where pollution is especially high. To this end, they require extensive data. As part of a pilot project in Nuremberg, for the first time, a method was developed that enables the analysis of traffic flows, and subsequently of air quality, using anonymised mobile network data. The approach is promising, which is why the methodology will be further developed in a follow-up project.

For the first time in ten years, Telefónica Deutschland is back at CeBIT with a large-scale stand. As a driver of digitization and the largest mobile communications provider on the German market by number of customers, the company presents its visions and products under the motto “#DesigningDigitalLife.” In an interview published in the CeBIT news room, CEO Markus Haas explains that, as an OnLife Telco, Telefónica Deutschland supports private and business customers in designing their digital lives according to their wishes and in making use of the opportunities of digitization.

The overburdening of city transport systems is becoming an increasing challenge. But before cities can take concrete action, they need to gather precise traffic data. This is often very time consuming and expensive. A study by the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering IAO in cooperation with Telefónica NEXT and the data analysis specialist Teralytics found that mobile network data can make a positive contribution to transport planning.

Telefónica launched the world’s first 3.5GHz LTE TDD Massive MIMO outfield trial, running 16 terminals simultaneously over 20MHz spectrum on the 3.5GHz band with a peak downlink rate of 650 Mbps on the Ggerman O2 sub network in Munich. Throughout the trial, the Telefónica Group verified the performance of TDD Massive MIMO, which is an important milestone of the Munich TechCity project by Telefónica and Huawei.
