O2 teaches school classes media competence

MUNICH. On the occasion of the Media Competence Days, Telefónica O2 Germany informs young people about the opportunities and risks of using mobile phones in the O2 World on tour in Munich, Cologne and Hamburg. On behalf of O2, the JFF - Institut für Medienpädagogik in Forschung und Praxis (institute for media education) developed a concept aimed to train media competence. At the beginning of the event, the JFF and O2 informed 285 students between 14 and 16 from grammar schools and secondary schools in Munich and the surrounding region about the dangers of mobile phones and creative opportunities of using a mobile phone.
It is not possible to imagine a day without a mobile phone - that is true of adults and young people. The rapid technological development has turned mobile phones into little multimedia all-rounders enabling a variety of applications. The focus of the Media Competence Days which started in Munich today is how students can deal responsibly with these new opportunities. More stops will be Cologne on 24 August and Hamburg on 25 September. "Our training concept playfully communicates the basic rules for dealing with the media", says Günther Anfang, Department Manager Media Practice at the JFF. "Today, young people are permanently exposed to media stimuli from most varied sources. Frequently, it is not easy to differentiate useful from insignificant or trustworthy from dangerous content. It is therefore important that telecommunications providers actively invest in educating young people." The educators of the JFF teach students how to deal responsibly with the mobile phone according to their age by showing short films, creating mobile phone clips and developing quiz games. Strengthened with this knowledge, Munich school classes from seven different schools today developed their own ideas for a mobile phone spot titled "Close up" in the subsequent creative part. The clips of all classes were professionally cut later on and presented at the end of the day. The students can also participate in the video competition "ohrenblick mal!" of the JFF. In November, the best contributions will be awarded by "ohrenblick mal!". Dr. Roland Kuntze who is responsible for Corporate Responsibility at Telefónica O2 Germany, explains: "As a telecommunications provider, we support initiatives that teach children and young people how to reliably deal with the mobile phone. O2 World on tour is a platform which we use to convey the excellent content of the JFF to a great number of young people." The mobile entertainment arena O2 World on tour has been en route in Germany since May. The first station is Munich. The special thing about it: All O2 events are free for visitors. In Munich, Thomas D will appear on stage, among others; the Söhne Mannheims already performed. Additional stops are Cologne and Hamburg.
