The currently rapid development of the mobile internet is comparable with the mobile communications boom at the turn of the millennium. From 2008 to 2009 alone, O2 expects that the number of mobile internet users will double from almost six to more than twelve million users based on market research results and sales figures. "Today, we observe a mobile internet revolution", said Schüler. Already every sixth German today uses the mobile internet.
The basis for the breakthrough of the mobile internet are changed customer requirements as they do not want to miss anything when they are on the go. Today, many users have integrated reading emails on the mobile phone, accessing digital roadmaps or talking to friends on social websites like Facebook in their everyday life. At the same time, the market has matured: UMTS and other technologies have made mobile telecommunications networks rapid and enabled users to surf comfortably. Mobile phones for the web are technically mature. At the same time, the classic internet players like Google are pushing the mobile internet even stronger by expanding their offer.
"Mobile telecommunications and the internet will grow together in the future", said Schüler. As part of the global Telefónica Group with 261 million mobile and fixed line customers and broad expertise ranging from IP-TV and interactive marketing to mobile payment systems O2 is perfectly positioned to embrace this trend.
