Simple and secure: instantly pay with a smartphone
MUNICH. Telefónica O2 Germany, Telekom Deutschland and Vodafone have added another function to the mobile payment system mpass: they have optimised mpass especially for mobile shopping solutions, thus making it incredibly easy to pay for purchases on the mobile Internet via a smartphone. mpass can be used by all customers with a German bank account, regardless of which mobile service provider the customer uses.
As the supply of Internet-capable smartphones increases, mobile methods of payment also gain in significance. The new mpass feature is particularly suited for people who frequently go online via their smartphone. Anyone who wants to purchase various products online quickly and conveniently reaches for their smartphone: mpass automatically recognises the user from the mobile number. As a result, it is only necessary to enter the mpass PIN to complete the payment. The customer then selects the product and takes care of placing the order and paying, all with a single click. Neither the mobile number, nor sensitive bank data are passed on to the merchant. Upon request, the address stored with mpass can automatically be used as the shipping address - there is no need to spend time typing it in. The advantages are obvious: mpass works quickly and easily from anywhere and is secure because the user must not enter either a credit card number or a bank connection. Settlement takes place by direct debit.
"The potential of using the Internet via smartphones is far from being exhausted," says René Schuster, CEO of Telefónica O2 Germany. "Mobile payments and integrating mpass into existing shop systems are thus the first step towards using smartphones as a method of payment." The mpass service is free, available online at all times, and easy to use. Prospective users can easily get activated at www.mpass.de. For contractual customers of O2 and Vodafone, the data stored with the mobile service provider will be used so that it is not necessary to re-enter information for each purchase. mpass acts as a trustee in mobile phone payment processes. The payment service was initiated in 2009 by Vodafone and O2 and has been developed on an ongoing basis ever since. Deutsche Telekom has also joined the initiative. Together with the shop partnersmymuesli.com and Ticket-web.de, the mobile solution will be available soon, thus setting another milestone in mobile commerce.
