"My neighbourhood. My idea": Telefónica Germany and DKJS launch Think Big 2011 in support of young people

Starting now, young people aged between 14 and 25 are invited to get involved in regional topics and projects: all they have to do is sign up at www.o2thinkbig.de and apply for support as part of Think Big: Hip Hop Battle, the legal Graffiti Wall or the Viral Spot on the environment and climate protection - provided that the idea advances the young people's neighbourhood, there are no bounds to their creativity. With the help of the DKJS and regional workshops, the company will approach potential participants in their surroundings, for example in youth centres, and encourage them to take part in the programme.
René Schuster, CEO of Telefónica Germany, explains: "The transition from youth to adult life is not always an easy one. We believe in young people and their potential, and this is precisely what we want to demonstrate through Think Big. We are excited about the many ideas that our programme will breathe life into and show that youngsters are better than their reputation might suggest." Dr. Heike Kahl, head of the DKJS, adds: "Self-starting qualities are an important requirement to participating in society and actively helping to shape it. With Think Big we encourage young people to realise their own projects and show them that their involvement is worth it."
Family Minister Kristina Schröder, the initiative's patron: "Our youth can! If we only trust in them and take them seriously. Programmes such as Think Big encourage their involvement. The programme helps them to develop new interests and gather experience in realising their own ideas - especially the experience that it is worthwhile to hang on to an item when it is conducted with passion and commitment. The music videos and workshops last year showed that fantasy and passion can get things moving."
Young people shape their future
Any young person with an idea for their neighbourhood should register at www.o2thinkbig.de. After a call from a regional Think Big project partner who advises and supports the young person during the project, each neighbourhood project receives a grant of 400 euros. The ways of getting involved cover a wide area of interests. In this way, several hundred ideas can be given targeted support and help in 2011, whether they involve sports, music, art or society. At two camps in the second half of the year, national projects will be developed together with the youngsters that encourage topics relevant to society - such as the environment and climate protection or ways of helping people with disabilities. A social campaign is also planned to start in summer 2011, which will be developed and realised in partnership with interested participants.
The well-known German rapper Kool Savas will again be lending Think Big a hand this year. At today's launch of the programme, he will attend a workshop in the "Am Biederstein" youth centre in Munich with René Schuster. Young people there will first prepare informational material for their project ideas, including a campaign against bullying at the school and a website against racism.
|Think Big is a social programme set up by Telefónica Europe. It was developed in collaboration with the Fundación Telefónica and builds on the latter's globally recognised expertise in social and cultural issues. The Fundación Telefónica was founded in Spain in 1998 with the goal of creating sustainable structures for social and cultural projects at all companies in the Telefónica Group. Many Telefónica employees have already taken part in the trust's Proniño programme, which supports schooling and training for more than 163,000 children in South America. In Germany, Think Big 2010 was organised in partnership with the DKJS and the prominent support of Kool Savas. It gave young people interested in media the chance to develop their own ideas for music videos to accompany the new Kool Savas song. At the same time, the Media College on Tour visited around 27 selected youth centres throughout Germany. Telefónica Germany GmbH & Co.
