Telefónica uses MasterCardPayPass: contactless payment via mpass
|Accepted at several thousand places in Germany|
|Mobile payment using NFC technology|
|Implemented in cooperation with financial service provider Wirecard|
For cash- and contactless purchasing pleasure via smartphone in retail stores, Telefónica will be using the payment standard MasterCardPayPass TM from now on. This is already accepted at many points of sale in Germany. Telefónica has teamed up with financial service provider Wirecard for the processing of payments using NFC (Near Field Communication) technology. "Our ecosystem around finance products is virtually complete," explains Michiel van Eldik, Managing Director of Wholesale & Partner Management at Telefónica Germany. "The use of MasterCardPayPass TM and the collaboration with Wirecard represent an important step in this regard. In short, our mpass customers benefit when out shopping from an extensive network of points at which this type of contactless payment is accepted - both in Germany and worldwide.
"tap & go" payment: convenient and fast
NFC technology comes into play when making contactless payments with mpass in retail stores. To do this, O2 customers get a sticker with an NFC chip, which they attach to their mobile phone. At the till, the user simply holds his or her telephone up to the MasterCardPayPass TM payment terminal ("tap"), at a distance of four centimetres or less. For amounts under 25 euros, payment takes place immediately, but for higher amounts the customer authorises the purchase with an additional PIN. A visual and acoustic signal confirms the success of the transaction in seconds - and the customer can be on his way ("go"). Customers have two options as to how to settle the amount later. Users can either have the amounts debited conveniently from their current account by direct debit, or they can top up credit via bank transfer to the mpass account which is opened on registering. Telefónica relies on technology and service provider Wirecard for processing payment transactions. Dr. Markus Braun, CEO of Wirecard AG explains: "We are delighted to be a partner of Telefónica, providing financial and technical services to support the introduction of contactless payment via mpass in the German market. NFC technology-based mobile payment at the point of sale offers entirely new possibilities for application for both retailers and smartphone users." Even at the market launch of mpass in retailers, several thousand points will already be offering this service to customers. These include nationwide outlets such as the Vapiano restaurant chain, the Douglas Group with Douglas Perfumeries, Thalia, Christ, AppelrathCüpper and Hussel, as well as an increasing number of branches of the supermarket chains real, hit, Edeka and dm. Customers can also benefit from mpass when travelling further afield, with some 500,000 PayPass points worldwide, 100,000 of which can be found in Europe alone.
|mpass is the joint mobile payment service from o2, Vodafone and Telekom. The service enables secure mobile and contactless payment for mobile phone users on all German networks. In addition to online shopping, mpass will also be made available for retail shopping in the course of the year.
