O2: The number of mobile internet users will almost triple by 2012

-Lutz Schüler, Managing Director Marketing & Sales, introduces the mobile internet strategy of O2
-By 2012 up to 30 million mobile internet users expected in Germany
MUNICH/DÜSSELDORF. Telefónica O2 Germany expects that the market for the mobile internet will strongly increase in the years to come. By 2012, the number of mobile internet users in Germany will almost triple to around 30 million, said Lutz Schüler, Managing Director Marketing & Sales, at the International Handelsblatt Jahrestagung "Telecom Market Europe 2009" in Düsseldorf. "As we operate one of the most modern data networks we will benefit above average from this trend", Schüler emphasized.
The currently rapid development of the mobile internet is comparable with the mobile communications boom at the turn of the millennium. From 2008 to 2009 alone, O2 expects that the number of mobile internet users will double from almost six to more than twelve million users based on market research results and sales figures. "Today, we observe a mobile internet revolution", said Schüler. Already every sixth German today uses the mobile internet. The basis for the breakthrough of the mobile internet are changed customer requirements as they do not want to miss anything when they are on the go. Today, many users have integrated reading emails on the mobile phone, accessing digital roadmaps or talking to friends on social websites like Facebook in their everyday life. At the same time, the market has matured: UMTS and other technologies have made mobile telecommunications networks rapid and enabled users to surf comfortably. Mobile phones for the web are technically mature. At the same time, the classic internet players like Google are pushing the mobile internet even stronger by expanding their offer. "Mobile telecommunications and the internet will grow together in the future", said Schüler. As part of the global Telefónica Group with 261 million mobile and fixed line customers and broad expertise ranging from IP-TV and interactive marketing to mobile payment systems O2 is perfectly positioned to embrace this trend.
Telefónica O2 Germany GmbH & Co. OHG belongs to Telefónica Europe and is part of the Spanish telecommunication group Telefónica S.A. The Company offers its German private and business customers postpaid and prepaid mobile telecom products as well as innovative mobile data services based on the GPRS and UMTS technologies. In addition, the integrated communications provider also offers DSL fixed network telephony and high-speed internet.
