Young German adults believe in technology but doubt economy and politics

-World's largest survey about Millennial-Generation of 18 to 30 year olds

MUNICH. "Technology creates more opportunities for all", "The global economy is on the wrong track", "The current political system does not represent the values and beliefs of our generation". The Telefónica Global Millennial Survey, presented today in London, shows detailed and surprising insights into the fears, believes, and hopes of the generation between 18 and 30 years of age in Germany and also worldwide. With more than 12.000 participants in 27 countries, so far it marks the biggest and most comprehensive survey of this generation of the so-called Millennials, who have been growing up with the internet and mobile-communication.

Young grown-ups in Germany are pretty well off comparably. However, German Millennials are not completely optimistic about their future. For them, modern technology plays an important role and enables various new possibilities to make a change beyond the established structures. This is especially true for the group of the "Millennial Elites", which have been identified throughout the study as the future innovators and leaders of tomorrow. "Thanks to this survey, we get important insights about the generation of young adults. They are convinced that they can make a difference and change things with the power that modern technology has to offer", says René Schuster, CEO at Telefónica Germany. "As an international company Telefónica champions open access to technology for everybody and engages in appropriate products and initiatives in order to improve the lives of the people and the society as a whole."
"The survey bridges a gap within the international survey landscape. Up to now, comparable data about young adults and their perspectives has been rare", states Dr. Heike Kahl, chief executive at German Children and Youth Foundation. "The results of this survey offer important starting points for politics, economy and the society as a whole. They reveal that we all together have to make sure to use the creative drive and the courage for change of this generation. This is the key resource for the future viability of our society."

Technology creates opportunities, a critical perspective on the economy and politics

With 81 percent, the overwhelming majority of the German Millennials believe that technology creates more opportunities for all instead of only a selected few. Worldwide, 69 percent are of the same opinion. Nevertheless, traditional values like family (87%), friendship (74%) and school (72%) still have a higher influence on the lives of young German adults (technology: 20%). Although the impact of the economic crisis has not been as strong as on the participants from other countries, 62% of the German Millenials consider the global economy to be on the wrong track. Young Germans are especially worried about their pensions: 62 percent believe that they will have to continue working indefinitely. About the future of their country the Millennials are divided: 53 percent said that the best times have passed whereas 47 percent believe that the best is yet to come. Not only the economic but also the socio-political status is evaluated differently: two thirds of the young grown-ups in Germany have the opinion that they can make a local difference but more than half of them think that the current political system does not represent their set of values and believes sufficiently. New technological possibilities help them shaping their opinion: 76 percent have the feeling that through technology they are better informed about the political processes within the country, more than half of the asked Millennials think that the government has become more transparent through technological progress. Nevertheless this is accompanied by a high degree of political apathy: Two thirds of them said that they only "sometimes" or "never" participate in political processes like elections. The gender gap still exists within this generation and becomes apparent when it comes to using technologies: Although German women own as much smartphones or notebooks as men do (three out of four each), and spend the same amount of time a day online (5 hours each), the male majority (85 percent) believes that their knowledge about technology is excellent or good, while only 65 percent of the women share this opinion about themselves.

The Millennial Elites: Innovators and future executives

In Germany, Millennials are very positive about entrepreneurship: 73 percent believe that they have the opportunity to become an entrepreneur in their country, but only every third young German pursues this goal (worldwide: 55 percent). But the survey identified a group within the Millennial generation for which a passion for technology, entrepreneurial spirit, and the belief in being able to make a change are especially distinct. These "Millennnial Elites" are more optimistic, more committed and more focused on their career than their contemporaries. When compared with the international results of the survey, Germany ranks slightly above the average. About the survey The Telefónica Millennial Survey is to date the biggest and most comprehensive survey about the generation of young adults between 18 and 30 years. In cooperation with Financial Times Telefónica has ordered 12,171 quantitative online interviews in 27 countries of the six regions North America, The Americas, Western Europe, Central and Eastern Europe, Asia as well as the Middle East and Africa. The survey includes 190 questions and was conducted from January 11 to February 4, 2013 by the renowned international market research company Penn Schoen Berland. Grown Millennials from Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Columbia, Egypt, Germany, France, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the Kingdom of Saudi-Arabia, Korea, Mexico, Peru, Poland, Russia, South Africa, Spain, the Czech Republic, Turkey, and Venezuela have been interviewed. The results of the survey will be announced on June 4 in course of the "Global Millennial Summit" in London.
