Data-based business models for transport, retail and the Internet of Things:

First anniversary of Telefónica NEXT

A year ago, Telefónica Deutschland founded its subsidiary for data-based business models: Telefónica NEXT. Plenty has happened since then: The corporate start-up has now conducted data analyses for transport planning in five German cities, it is strengthening bricks-and- mortar retail and thus German city centres with its analytical expertise, and it has made the alpha version of its “Geeny” IoT platform for end-user applications available to developers and companies. We take a look back.

Telefónica Deutschland expands its mobile O2 Business portfolio

Telefónica Deutschland expands its mobile business portfolio, offering even more data volume starting 18 September. With up to 30 GB of monthly high-speed data volume, this leaves virtually no limits to working efficiently on the move. Effective of the same day, Telefónica Deutschland expands its portfolio by the new O2 Business Basic tariffs for companies whose employees require only small amounts of data. The focus of the flexible voice tariff is on calls. Business customers can customize their O2 Business Basic tariffs thanks to a wide range of options – from smartphones to extra data volume.

Pilot Project by Telefónica NEXT, South Pole Group and Teralytics:

Successful test of Air Quality Analysis using mobile network data

Large cities are faced with constantly increasing pollution. But before cities can take specific measures against this problem, they first have to know where pollution is especially high. To this end, they require extensive data. As part of a pilot project in Nuremberg, for the first time, a method was developed that enables the analysis of traffic flows, and subsequently of air quality, using anonymised mobile network data. The approach is promising, which is why the methodology will be further developed in a follow-up project.

Smart data analysis for transport in Stuttgart:

Fraunhofer IAO confirms the potential of mobile network data for transport planning

The overburdening of city transport systems is becoming an increasing challenge. But before cities can take concrete action, they need to gather precise traffic data. This is often very time consuming and expensive. A study by the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering IAO in cooperation with Telefónica NEXT and the data analysis specialist Teralytics found that mobile network data can make a positive contribution to transport planning.
