Only half of all businesses are using mobile internet to get ahead

-Study: Less than 50 percent of German companies are using mobile internet on smartphones or laptops
-Internet, data synchronisation and email are key applications
-Demand for integrated telecommunications offerings on the rise
MUNICH/HANNOVER. German firms have not yet tapped the true potential of the mobile internet for their businesses. This was the finding of a representative study of 2100 German firms conducted by the market research institute TNS Infratest on behalf of Telefónica O2 Germany. Less than half of the companies (45 percent) report using mobile internet on smartphones or a laptop. Mobile data communication is most prevalent among bigger organisations: 83 percent of companies with more than 500 workers provide their employees with smartphones or laptops that can be used for mobile data services.
"The mobile internet is gaining speed in the business sector because small and mid-sized firms are recognising the benefits of mobile data communication," noted Johannes Pruchnow, Director of Business & Wholesale Services at Telefónica O2 Germany, at the CeBIT trade show. "The reasons for this are improved and faster data networks and the fact that there are now tariffs suitable for mobile internet for companies," Pruchnow said. Telefónica O2 Germany launched its new O2 on mobile tariff at the beginning of the year. It provides business customers with a flat rate for calling into all national networks as well as unlimited usage of the mobile internet. The study found that business-related mobile internet usage centres primarily around data synchronisation (51 percent), browser usage and mobile internet applications (47 percent) and email (45 percent). Smartphones are growing more and more popular with companies, and at this point are as frequently used for mobile data services as laptops. Trend towards integrated offers One important trend among business customers: bundled offers for mobile and landline telecommunication services. Half of all companies (55 percent) surveyed for the study are interested in having landline and mobile services from one source. This is not just a question of cutting costs (69 percent), but also in achieving more transparency for telecommunications expenditures (68 percent). More than one in two companies (57 percent) also indicated that they are interested in the benefits of having one central contact partner for integrated telecommunication services. Network quality a major factor The survey claims that network quality is also an important factor for corporate decision makers when it comes to telecommunication services. Two-thirds of all companies (73 percent) cited a powerful network for the use of mobile internet applications as the most important criteria in picking a mobile service provider. Costs (67 percent) and service quality (62 percent) were also given top priority. "For companies in particular it's important that they can rely on first-class data delivery for their mobile internet use," Pruchnow explained. Telefónica O2 Germany has invested three billion euros in expanding its network in recent years and now possesses one of the most modern data networks in Europe. As stated by Pruchnow: "Our goal is to be the provider of choice for companies when it comes to mobile internet."
