Students in Hamburg know how to do it

MUNICH. A Media Competence Day took place in the O2 World on tour in Hamburg today with about 300 young people from 14 to 16 years of age. Telefónica O2 Germany informs about the opportunities and potential risks of using new media like the internet and mobile phone in this event series for students and teachers in Munich, Cologne and Hamburg. The training concept was jointly developed by O2 and the Institute for Media Education in Research and Practice (JFF) which also organised the event.
Students from secondary schools, secondary modern schools and grammar schools in Hamburg and the surrounding region participated in today's Media Competence Day, among them were students from the Surenland Schule, the Gesamtschule Walddörfer and the private school St. Georg. The pedagogues of the JFF taught the students in Hamburg how to deal responsibly with the new media according to their age in the form of short films, mobile phone clips and in a quiz. Are others allowed to put photos of me online without my permission? What is cyber mobbing and how do I protect myself? How do I behave when I get unwanted advertising SMS text messages? Topics like these were discussed lively with the students. Later on, the classes were allowed to be creative themselves and implemented their own ideas in a self-produced spot for the mobile phone. The clips of all classes were professionally cut and presented at the end of the day. The know-how about the video shoot with the mobile phone optimally prepares the young people to participate in the mobile clip competition "ohrenblick mal!" of the JFF under "The media competence trainings playfully communicate the basic rules for dealing with the media", says Günther Anfang, Department Manager Media Practice at the JFF. "It is important that the telecommunications industry actively invests in the education of young people." Dr. Roland Kuntze, who is responsible for Corporate Responsibility at Telefónica O2 Germany, explains: "As a telecommunications provider, we want to train children and young people how to responsibly use the new media. The O2 World on tour is a platform which we use to clearly convey the excellent content of the JFF to a great number of young people in a lively and creative atmosphere." The mobile entertainment arena O2 World on tour has been on the road in Germany since May. The special thing about it: All O2 events are free to visitors.
