EU approves Telefónica's purchase of HanseNet
MUNICH. The European Commission's approval under competition law of 29 January 2010 is an important step for Telefónica in the purchase of HanseNet Telekommunikation. With total sales amounting to € 5 billion, the company will then be one of Germany's largest three telecommunications service providers.
"Telefónica O2 Germany is the fastest growing telecom service provider on the German market. Together with HanseNet, we can now accelerate this development all the more", comments René Schuster, CEO Telefónica O2 Germany. "We welcome the decision of the EU Commission. Last year, HanseNet was able to hold its ground well against the competition and, following this decision, we are confident that we will be able to continue on in this positive vein," says Paolo Ferrari, Managing Director at HanseNet. Following the approval, which was given without any restrictions, the companies can commence with the final closing of the transaction. HanseNet is expected to join the Telefónica Group in the first quarter of 2010.
