MUNICH. With a significant investment in new frequencies, Telefónica O2 Germany today underscored its strong commitment to the German market. On this basis, O2 will continue to offer its customers a state of the art network and new technologies like high-speed mobile internet. With the new frequencies and its modern network, Telefónica O2 Germany is well prepared for the fast rising demands of mobile data through smartphones, netbooks and other new devices.
CEO René Schuster comments: "This investment in new frequencies reaffirms our position as a key player in the German market and will speed up our development of future products and services. We achieved all our aims at the auction. With two blocks in the 800 MHz band and enough bandwidth in other spectrums, we will bring new technologies and high-speed mobile internet to our customers nationwide. We will start our first regional LTE network before the end of this year. As we fully support the broadband strategy of the German government, our aim is to start these new technologies as soon as possible and to fulfil our part to bring broadband internet to more rural areas. The price for the frequencies was in line with our predictions." Matthew Key, CEO of Telefónica Europe says: "As one of the biggest telecommunication companies in the world, Telefónica is strongly committed to the German market. In the last four years we invested four billion Euros in Germany and built one of the most modern 3G networks in Europe. Beginning of this year we started the integration of HanseNet and significantly increased our customer base in DSL and fixed-net. On this basis and with the new frequencies, we will continue to leverage our German business." Telefónica O2 Germany acquired two blocks in the limited 800 MHz spectrum at the German frequency auction, which is the technical basis for a nationwide LTE network. O2 also secured 1 block of 2.0 GHz and 4 blocks of 2.6 GHz. The total investment in new frequencies by Telefónica O2 Germany is 1.38 billion Euros.
