Dow Jones Sustainability Index

Telefónica leads the Dow Jones Sustainability Index in the telecommunications sector for the second time in a row

MUNICH. Telefónica is once again the leading telecommunications company in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI). This global study evaluates companies from 19 industries not only according to their economic performance, but also giving consideration to ecological and social criteria. In the study Telefónica received 84 out of 100 points and thus had a 26 point edge over the average results in its industry.
The DJSI recognised Telefónica in the seven following core areas as the best company in the telecommunications industry: risk and crisis management, suppliers, environmental policy, development of human resources, impacts of telecommunications services, social action and stakeholders engagement. Dow Jones publishes the Sustainability Index annually in cooperation with the rating agency Sustainable Asset Management (SAM) and evaluates companies according to their sustainability management in consideration of economic, ecological and social aspects. Telefónica is also the winner in its industry in the area of social commitment: with 90 points the company earned the highest number of points in this sector and was thus placed 32 points above the average. This assessment took into consideration labour indicators, performance in the development of human resources, talent retention, digital inclusion, impacts of telecommunications services, social action, social information, stakeholders engagement, responsibility in the supply chain and also - for the first time this year - health and safety in the workplace. Telefónica earned an especially high number of points in the area of human resources. In 2009 Telefónica invested around 63 million euros in employee training. Another remarkable initiative for employees is the new stock savings programme, which rewards employee commitment and increasingly involves them in shaping the future of the company.
