New online discussion about sustainable consumption at www.diskutiere.de

MUNICH. An open online dialogue kicks off today at www.diskutiere.de bearing the title "Why be green and fair - mobile phones should be smart, fast and stylish!" The subject of the open dialogue, which has been initiated by Telefónica Germany and non-profit organisation UPJ e.V., is the question of whether and how sustainable consumption and lifestyle is achievable in the age of smartphones, apps & co.

Paying attention to the sustainability aspect

"More and more consumers are paying attention to the sustainability aspect behind their purchases, which is in turn influencing society, the environment and businesses. With this in mind, we are holding a discussion on whether it is possible to practise sustainability in our digitalised world and how this might be done. We invite you all, should you be interested in this subject, to join us for the discussion at www.diskutiere.de", explains André Krause, CFO of Telefónica Germany. Spoiled meat, toys made through child labour or climate-damaging, fuel-guzzling vehicles - the question of the kind of world we live in and what sort of world we want to raise our children in is something that concerns a great many people.
They want to be able to dictate how sustainable their lifestyles are through their purchases - whether it's in their choice of breakfast eggs, washing machines or electricity suppliers. Does this also apply in the telecommunications sector? The online dialogue aims to review the issues of purchasing, using and disposing of mobile devices: How important is the factor of sustainability in purchasing decisions compared to technological innovations and cost? How can consumers get to grips with this subject and find out more about the ecological and social aspects of the technology? How much of the responsibility falls upon manufacturers and mobile phone providers? What options do the latest technologies, such as smartphone apps, offer for increasing sustainability in our daily lives? How come consumers don't take more advantage of the recycling programmes initiated by mobile phone providers? These questions and more will be discussed with representatives from industry, society, politics and administration at www.diskutiere.de from 6 June to 11 July. The discussion will be supplemented by expert contributions from Michael Bültmann, CEO of Nokia GmbH, Judith Hübner from the Consumer Initiative, Cornelia Heydenreich from the non-governmental organisation (NGO) Germanwatch, Maurice Stanszus, founder and CEO of the company WeGreen as well as David Sondermann from the German Federal Environment Agency. The contributions from UPJ will then be reviewed and will be presented and discussed as part of an event in Munich on 28 June 2011.

Sustainable consumption - the O2 Eco Index

As one of the first telecommunications providers to do so, in May 2011 Telefónica Germany introduced a rating system in Germany that assesses the environmental and social compatibility of mobile phones. The system is called Eco Index. As a result, customers can now find information online at www.o2.de about the sustainability aspects of their preferred mobile phone. UPJ is a network of engaged businesses and non-profit intermediary organisations in Germany. At its core are projects that contribute to resolving social problems in creating new links between companies, non-profit organisations and public authorities. The non-profit UPJ e.V. also supports these parties, giving information and advice on the development and implementation of their Corporate Citizenship and Corporate Social Responsibility activities.
