Number of volunteers doubled, donations quadrupled

MUNICH/Germany. Telefónica Germany has published its latest Corporate Responsibility Report at This provides information about the telecommunication provider's key performance indicators and main CR areas for 2010 as well as its CR objectives for 2011.
"We define responsibility as enabling society to take future-oriented actions through social commitment, innovations and new solutions," explains René Schuster, CEO Telefónica Germany. "As such, our focus is on Think Big, with which we aim to achieve this goal. In this process, we promote young people's skills and help them actively shape society, make the most of their talents and show what they are capable of. Our objective is to reach at least 5,000 young people across Germany with Think Big by 2011 - and by 2015 a total of 50,000."

Think Big - The long-term initiative to support young people's commitment

In cooperation with the German Children and Youth Foundation (DKJS) and federal family minister Dr. Kristina Schröder, the enterprise launched the Think Big programme last year. More than 1,300 young people were involved in the project. Designed as a long-term commitment, Think Big is entering its next round this year: under the motto "Mein Kiez. Meine Idee", young people can apply at and realise projects. Telefónica provides financial support and technical coaching to the young participants. Overall, the company invested more than 700,000 euros in charities in 2010 - more than four times as much as in the previous year. On top of that, Telefónica employees donate their time: compared to the previous year, the number of volunteers has almost doubled to 1,205 employees in 2010. This year, the aim is for 15 percent of all employees to take part in voluntary projects, with seven percent of these being Think Big projects.

Access to communication

To help the approximately 300,000 severely hearing impaired people in Germany lead a more independent life, Telefónica provides a special service concept, which includes an online concept with videos in sign language. Since 2010, Telefónica Germany has been cooperating with the social organisation VerbaVoice in order to provide a real-time communication solution: a mobile written interpreting service that converts voice to text and transfers this to laptops or mobile phones via the Internet. This enables hearing impaired students to follow their school lessons virtually in real time. To date, some 2,500 hours of classes have been made barrier-free with this method. By launching the corresponding mobile application, the number of hours is set to increase even further. Another goal for 2011 is to increase the number of disabled employees by half a percentage point to a total of two percent.

Climate and environment

"Last year, one of the most important issues for us was climate and environmental protection," says André Krause, CFO Telefónica Germany. In 2010, we covered 61 percent of our total consumption through electricity from renewable energy sources. And we plan to maintain this percentage in 2011 as well - despite the network expansions and the HanseNet integration. By 2015, energy consumption per landline and mobile phone connection in the Telefónica networks is meant to decrease by 30 percent, and in the offices, call centres and shops by ten percent per employee. In addition, Telefónica Germany introduced the Eco Index in May 2011 in order to enable its customers to make a sustainable purchase decision when buying a mobile telephone. The Eco Index was developed in collaboration with the independent Forum for the Future experts. The Index rates the sustainability of almost all O2 mobile phones by assigning them each a value between zero and five. In the process, the impact of the device on the environment, the contribution to more sustainable living conditions and the manufacturer's ethical conduct are taken into consideration.
