Developer platform BlueVia opens API for payment

App content now chargeable with mobile phone bill via Telefónica's interface MUNICH. Telefónica's BlueVia platform has provided its software developers with another important function: payments for smartphone apps and PC application content can now be made via a new interface. It can be used to pay for digital magazine issues or virtual goods for mobile phone games, for example.
These "in-app payments" are debited automatically via the user's mobile phone bill. The payment API (application programming interface) is available with immediate effect in Germany and other European countries. As a result, BlueVia application developers can integrate additional products subject to charge. Such sales in apps are an especially attractive income source for software providers. The US marketing research company Distimo discovered, for example, that in-app payments generated 72 percent of the income in Apple's App Store - although they were only available for four percent of the software.
The new API is another step by BlueVia to support its developers in the monetisation their apps. The Telefónica platform cooperates with BOKU, one of the world's leading service providers for mobile payments, in handling transactions. "In-app payments are not just a hot topic, but also an important part of our financial services strategy. Many studies have shown that they greatly increase the income of app developers," explained Michiel van Eldik, Managing Director Wholesale and Partner Management of Telefónica Germany. "Handling the payment process via the mobile phone bill is the easiest way and BlueVia is the first provider to supply also smaller companies and individual developers with this service in such an uncomplicated way." Thanks to BlueVia, software developers can create smartphone apps, web services and desktop applications and will soon be able to offer them to a big part of the 290 million Telefónica customers worldwide. In doing so developers can not only use mobile network functions like SMS, MMS and payment processes, which in the past they were prevented from doing, but will also get a share of the income from these functions.
When it comes to the new in-app payments, almost 80 percent of turnover will go to the content providers and software developers. As a result, they will achieve additional continuing income even after the sale of their app. It does not require contracts with a long duration or high minimum turnover. All they have to do is register as a developer at and submit their software for examination and release.
