Nine startups picked: Wayra announces winners

-Intelligent solutions for social networks, M2M and smartphone apps

Wayra presents its winners for Germany. At today's final decision for the Telefónica startup programme, nine startups won the field and will move to Munich's Wayra Academy starting in September. There, they not only move into the very latest in offices and receive financing of up to 50,000 Euros, for which no exclusivity is demanded, but will also be able to draw on coaching and contacts. Their business ideas range from smart new social networks, to machine-to-machine communication, all the way to clever smartphone apps.
José María Álvarez-Pallete, CEO of Telefónica Europe, and Neelie Kroes, EU Commissioner for the Digital Agenda, announced today the chosen companies together with René Schuster, CEO of Telefónica Germany, and Gonzalo Martin-Villa, CEO of Wayra. But beforehand, the startups had to pass the three-day Wayra Week selection process at Campus Party Europe. During the world's largest technology festival, which runs at Berlin's Tempelhof Airport until Sunday, the candidates in the last round appeared before a top-flight jury. The panel of independent entrepreneurs, technology experts and venture capitalists checked the founders' business plans and chose the best of them. "The intelligent business ideas I had the chance to listen to by the German Wayra startups thoroughly impressed me," says José María Álvarez-Pallete. "Their solutions are not only at the cutting edge of technology, but also demonstrate an innovative approach that has the potential to benefit our 300 million customers around the world. Telefónica's involvement in these companies reinforces our commitment to accelerate the success of innovative high tech companies in Europe and beyond." One example is Cleverlize: Their app makes the smartphone a class room. The corresponding cloud application helps with the creation and user-specific distribution of mobile learning content. Very innovative is also Mynudge: A "digital shoulder angel" tracks and evaluates how users progress in reaching personal goals. Automatic machine-to-machine communication (M2M) makes it possible. And Pockets United is a social network with a special purpose: a service for groups of friends to split their day-to-day costs among each other. Payment morale is no longer a problem as the app automatically calculates everything and keeps an eye on the costs. Telefónica also announced during Wayra Week who will run the academy in Munich. For the first time, both directors' posts at a Wayra Academy are held by women. The new director, Tanja Kufner, has many years' experience as an active investor in various venture capital companies and in corporate venturing for LVMH and Siemens, among others. Her previous investments included well-known companies like GetMobile, Cynobia, Gate5 and CargoGuard. Tanja Kufner also worked as a consultant in Silicon Valley for nine years. Her vice-director will be Stefanie Pöschl from Telefónica Germany's Business Customers division. The Wayra Academy also gives the entrepreneurs the opportunity to access a global network with over 12 academies located across Europe and Latin America. At the end of their stay of several months, the startups will present their projects at a demo day to risk capital investors for follow-up financing. Telefónica will take a small stake in the startups in exchange for the acceleration through a convertible note. In Europe, Wayra is a key element of Telefónica Think Big, a series of commitments running until 2015 to promote an entrepreneurial spirit across the continent.
