A New Milestone in Munich TechCity:

Telefónica Germany and Huawei Completed - FDD Massive MIMO Field Trial

Telefónica Germany successfully carried out LTE FDD Massive MIMO field trial in Munich on July 20th 2017. The trial is the latest milestone in the operator’s collaboration with Huawei –referred to as Munich TechCity- that accelerates the application of new mobile technologies in its live network. The test was based on eight commercial terminals with 16 streams simultaneously connected to a 10MHz LTE carrier in the 1.8 GHz band and demonstrated the potential of the FDD Massive MIMO technology by achieving 4.8 times spectrum efficiency improvement compared to current FDD LTE network.
As mobile users consume more and more high-definition video and cloud services, the traffic in 4G networks has entered into a phase of rapid growth worldwide. Massive MIMO can help operators increase the network capacity and improve the user experience without requiring more spectrum or sites. Massive MIMO is the most promising technology to enhance the efficiency of the spectrum. Both Telefónica and Huawei have pioneered the development and usage of Massive MIMO technology. Together they have launched the world’s first 3.5GHz TDD Massive MIMO field trial in February 2017. This time, the successful verification in 1.8GHz, the most popular FDD band, demonstrates that the Massive MIMO technology has a big potential and will certainly make a great contribution to LTE evolution. Cayetano Carbajo Martín, CTO, Telefónica Germany, said: "Telefónica is dedicated to provide a better service experience to customers and pave the way to 5G with more cutting-edge technologies. Massive MIMO will help Telefónica to significantly improve user experience. It reuses existing spectrum and sites, effectively lowering the cost per bit. We will continue to work with Huawei to do research and practical experiences of more joint innovations in the TechCity project." Yang Tao, CEO of Germany Huawei Tech. Investment, added “We are very delighted to collaborate with Telefónica on this FDD Massive MIMO technology demonstration. Today’s result is a great breakthrough and will bring many benefits for Germany mobile data users. The comprehensive cooperation with Telefónica in the TechCity shows that both parties recognize the value brought by new technology. We are looking forward to more exciting achievements in the TechCity.”
