On February 27th 2018, representatives of Telefónica Deutschland and Huawei underlined their successful cooperation within the framework of the Munich TechCity project during a meeting at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona. The partners signed a new agreement at the Huawei stand in Hall 1 of the Fira Gran Via exhibition center. This extends the cooperation within the framework of the TechCity project in the technology standard 4.5G by three years and explicitly includes 5G. In 2016, the two technology companies set up a 4.5G test network consisting of eight mobile phone systems around the Telefónica headquarters and the Olympic site in Munich. There, they are driving the research and development of various applications and services on the way to the new high-speed 5G mobile network.

TechCity provides an outlook on the network architecture of the future

Within two years, the TechCity project has produced many interesting innovations. For example, the 4.5G test network reached data transmission speeds of up to 1.7 gigabits per second for the first time some time ago. A new Telefónica website provides information on such innovations and the latest progress. Here, Telefónica will present all relevant information on the TechCity project as well as overviews of the latest tests and research results. The TechCity project provides both technology companies with an outlook for the future. For example, the future 5G standard will enable the two technology companies to achieve many times more data transfer rates in mobile communications than has previously been the case. Current research in the 4.5G network will be used by Telefónica for the rollout of the new 5G technology and as a further important step into the future of digitalization. With the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), the two technology partners sealed the extension of the cooperation by 5G. The companies are thus intensively preparing the introduction of 5G in Germany. “The expansion of our cooperation is a logical step that we are taking with Huawei. With TechCity, we have already been very active and successful technologically on both management and working levels. Following the official launch of the first standard last December, we will now work together to further develop 5G in the coming years”, said Cayetano Carbajo Martín, CTO of Telefónica Germany during his visit at Huawei in Barcelona.
