Milestone:O2 with entirely independent network

MUNICH. Telefónica O2 Germany is about to complete the massive expansion and reconstruction of its network. From 5 January 2010, all mobile calls and the entire mobile data traffic will be transmitted over the own mobile network of O2. By that time, the company will provide an almost 100 percent population coverage rate for telephony and a 99 percent coverage rate for mobile data.
O2 has invested almost € 3 billion in the expansion of the network in the last three years. With about 17,000 GSM and 9,500 UMTS base stations, the German mobile telecommunications network of O2 is one of Europe's most modern networks. In addition to the introduction of new technologies for the rapid uploading and downloading of mobile data, the company has connected its mobile telecommunications structure to the IP based German fixed network of Telefónica. O2 is thus perfectly positioned for future growth. "The disconnection from the national roaming is one of the greatest milestones in our company's history", says René Schuster, the CEO of Telefónica O2 Germany. "We are now on par with the two market leaders. We will continue to expand our market position with our modern network infrastructure and innovative products like O2 o." In October 2009, the high quality of the O2 mobile telecommunications network, both for telephony and for the mobile internet, was confirmed by Connect's Netztest (network test) 2009. After a major leap, O2 is now one of the top players, according to Connect. O2 achieved very good results in terms of the upload and download of files on the mobile web. Next year, O2 will continue to invest in its network infrastructures. The company will drive the further expansion of its mobile broadband network to almost 70 percent of the population coverage in 2010. In addition, O2 is working on the technical commercialisation of the HSPA+ network which has gone live in several parts of Munich and is reviewing the further roll-out across Germany.
