Result development in second quarter:Telefónica Germany shows healthy growth

MUNICH. Telefónica Germany showed healthy growth in the second quarter despite very competitive market conditions. Buoyed by the continuing upward trend in new postpaid customers, mobile revenue, in particular, increased, while the company also saw strong gains in its operative result (OIBDA).

Building on the good results in the first quarter of the year, Telefónica Germany continued its positive growth in the second quarter. Total accesses (mobile, fixed network, wholesale) rose by 5 percent year-on-year as of the end of June to 25.2 million. The number of new prepaid customers increased significantly compared with Q1. In particular, the 190,000 new customers in postpaid helped drive growth, representing a 12 percent increase in postpaid customers compared to June 2011. The company's mobile service revenue reached 789 million euros in the second quarter of 2012, up 8.6 percent on Q2 2011. Mobile revenue also showed strong growth, with an increase of 11.2 percent to 950 million euros over the same period. This also boosted the total revenue in the second quarter, which rose to 1.3 billion euros.
"New business fields such as mobile payment are important elements of our growth strategy", saysRéne Schuster, CEO of Telefónica Germany. "We already have 400,000 customers per month using our payment service via mobile bill. By the end of the year mobile payment service in shops will also be available." Non-SMS data revenue increased by 26.8 percent compared to the second quarter of the previous year. The share of data ARPU in the total ARPU was particularly positive; compared with Q2 2011, it grew by 2.9 percentage points. The data ARPU share in the total ARPU is now 44.1 percent - a clear indication for the data business success. There was also a rise in the average monthly revenue per user (ARPU). At 13.9 euros, it was up 2.2 percent on the second quarter 2011.
"We are growing healthily despite very competitive market conditions", says Rachel Empey, CFO of Telefónica Germany. "Our results prove that our strategy of growing sustainably is the right one." Telefónica Germany's operative result (OIBDA) rose to 333 million euros, an increase of 12 percent on the second quarter of last year. And the OIBDA margin also showed an upward trend, increasing by 1.2 percentage points to 25.7 percent over the same period.
