Telefónica's startup initiative: First Wayra Investor demoDay in Germany
MUNICH. Wayra, Telefónica's global startup accelerator, today hosts its first Investor demoDay in Germany. Eight startups from the Munich's Wayra academy present themselves to leading investors coming from all over the republic and several European countries.
Pockets United, ClearKarma, Fabbeo, Chuisy, Becoacht, Spotfav, i-Frontdesk and Cleverlize compete in a pitch for the next round of financing. In this demanding form of presentation young companies have to present their business concepts and so far achieved successes while being extremely pressed for time in order to convince their potential investors. In the "Agora" called event area of the Wayra academy in Munich, the presentations take place continuously while the investors make notes and prepare for one-on-one interviews. In the following networking time the investment deals can be initiated.
"Our startups in Munich present convincing solutions for future business concepts", said Gonzalo Martín-Villa, Global CEO Wayra, who opens the Investor demoDay. "From mobile payment to 3D printing, internet video and e-learning the most exciting development areas of today's technology sector are represented." He knows the young companies from their first day in Telefónica's startup program and remarks "this Investor Day is their graduation from the Wayra Academy, but they will continue to be involved as alumni in the global ecosystem we have created."
"It's amazing how much we have accomplished since the founding of our German Wayra academy", said Tanja Kufner, Academy Director Wayra Germany. "In only a couple of months, our startups optimized their business and the academy established itself in the center of Munich's startup scene."
Cleverlize, for instance, achieved over 1.5 million downloads for its most successful e-learning app. Also Pockets United won a prize as Best of Show Winner among the many startups from all over Europe which were allowed to present themselves to big players in the line such as American Express, BBVA, or Citibank. Also the high class events like Allianz Google Hackathon, Munich Venture Summit, or the three-day workshop with Lean Startup Machine have contributed to Wayra's establishment. They are an important component of the quick-growth program consisting of capital, coaching and contacts with which Wayra gets the mostly very young startups in shape for the market.
Several weeks after the Investor demoDay the first startup generation will leave the Wayra academy in the centre of Munich. The company founders will stand on their own feet then and can themselves become mentors for the next generation. In September, their successors will move in. These new companies are already being selected out of more of 3,000 applicants of the second worldwide Wayra call that has just been finished.
