  • 3,500 expansion measures since the beginning of the year for a better mobile network nationwide
  • 200 new mobile phone masts in 2025 so far
  • 5G now available to 98 percent of the population
  • “We are maintaining the high pace of expansion to bring Germany forward digitally,” says CTEO Mallik Rao
Telecommunications provider O2 Telefónica has comprehensively expanded its mobile network in the first six months of 2025. With around 3,500 expansion measures since the beginning of the year, the company is ensuring noticeable improvements wherever users need them for mobile telephony and data usage. O2 Telefónica has put 200 new mobile phone sites into operation – this is equal to one new mast per day. These now provide optimized reception – especially in rural areas, along transport routes, and in popular vacation regions. This means that mobile phone users will have access to a better O2 network nationwide just in time for the start of the summer holidays.

“We are maintaining the high pace of expansion to bring Germany forward digitally. Whether in the city, in rural areas or on the move by train or car – we are investing where our customers need our network. Our comprehensive expansion measures have a clear goal: we want to create an even more powerful network for everyone. 3,500 measures in six months show that we are serious about this,” says Mallik Rao, Chief Technology and Enterprise Officer at O2 Telefónica.

Since the beginning of the year, O2 Telefónica has upgraded more than 1,000 mobile sites with 5G. The provider now reaches around 98 percent of the population with the modern mobile communications standard. O2 postpaid customers can also use 5G standalone, which O2 offers under the name “5G Plus”. The expansion is also important because mobile data usage by customers is constantly increasing: O2 Telefónica recently carried out more than 1,700 capacity upgrades at its 28,000 mobile phone sites across Germany.

O2 mobile network continues to grow

The 200 additional mobile phone masts now ensure better reception, primarily in rural areas and along transport routes. In April, O2 Telefónica put a new mobile phone site into operation at Brombachsee, south of Nuremberg. Usage figures show that the expansion is being well received by customers. On public holidays such as Ascension Day and Pentecost, around 500 gigabytes per day flowed through the O2 network locally thanks to the new cell tower. Numerous day trippers are likely to have used the expanded network in the local recreation area for navigation and music and video streaming. O2 Telefónica has also put new mobile phone sites into operation in Zwiesel in the Bavarian Forest, in Berka vor dem Hainich in Thuringia, and in Montabaur-Bladernheim. New sites in Kallmünz in the Upper Palatinate, Altenkirchen in Thuringia, Dörnberg in Rhineland-Palatinate, and Handeloh in Lower Saxony improve reception for motorists along the state and federal highways there. A new site near Furth im Wald now ensures reliable network coverage along the railway line.

Mobile masts for events – 100,000 gigabyte mark broken at Rock am Ring

Summertime is festival time. O2 Telefónica is currently deploying 80 mobile 5G masts to provide comprehensive network capacity wherever thousands of people want to stream and communicate at the same time, but demand is otherwise rather low. At Rock am Ring in the Eifel region, fans broke a new record on the first weekend of June: the local O2 network transported more than 100,000 gigabytes during the festival for the first time.

In June, mobile 5G masts from O2 Telefónica were in use at events including Rock im Park, Hurricane, Southside, Burning Beach, MDR Sputnik Springbreak, Ikarus Festival, Ferropolis, Kieler Woche, Hessentag, Filmnächte am Elbufer in Dresden, and the Sterkrader Fronleichnamskirmes. They supplement the existing O2 network on site with additional capacity. In July, separate expansion measures will follow for events such as Parookaville, Deichbrand, Rockharz Open Air, the Tollwood Summer Festival, and the CHIO Aachen horse races. The nationwide expansion of the O2 mobile network will also continue at a rapid pace in the coming months.
