Good news from today’s mobile summit, convened by Andreas Scheuer, Federal Minister of Transport and Digital Infrastructure, in Berlin: All parties concerned from the federal government, federal states, local umbrella organisations and the industry have signed an ambitious declaration to fill in the blank spots on Germany’s network supply map.

On its way to the mobile communications network of the future, Telefónica Deutschland is cooperating with NGN FIBER NETWORK KG (NGN) from Lower Franconia in order to have parts of its mobile communications locations connected to high-speed fibre-optic lines. The goal of the network operator is to further improve the performance of its own LTE network, while laying the foundation for a nationwide 5G network that offers significantly better data rates, higher capacities and extremely low latency times.

The network integration is a major project unparalleled in Europe and is currently in full swing across Germany, making great progress in all regions.

Nokia and Telefónica Germany are taking Nokia’s “factory in a box” (FiaB) concept – a modular, portable production line in standard cargo containers – one step closer to real-world deployment.

In addition to existing projects such as TechCity and "5G Connected Mobility", Telefónica Germany has been supporting another 5G project since the beginning of the year. At the transmitter site in Wendelstein near Rosenheim, a test field for 5G broadcasting in the frequency range around 700 MHz is currently being built.

On February 27th 2018, representatives of Telefónica Deutschland and Huawei underlined their successful cooperation within the framework of the Munich TechCity project during a meeting at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona. The partners signed a new agreement at the Huawei stand in Hall 1 of the Fira Gran Via exhibition center. This extends the cooperation within the framework of the TechCity project in the technology standard 4.5G by three years and explicitly includes 5G.

Telefónica Deutschland has started the company’s sweeping digital transformation into a mobile customer and digital champion by 2022. The programme, dubbed Digital4Growth, puts the needs of customers and customer experience in the Digital Age consistently at the centre of focus.

Vodafone and Telefónica Deutschland are planning to accelerate the connection of their mobile phone sites to fast fibre-optic cables. The two companies have agreed on a pilot project to connect parts of their mobile locations to each other’s high-speed backhaul broadband lines. As a result of the cooperation, even more customers will benefit directly from high-speed data coverage via LTE (4G).

Telefónica Deutschland will be the first network operator in Germany to provide voice calls via LTE and WiFi for all customers of its home brands and partner brands. This includes both postpaid and prepaid customers. When making calls with these technologies, so-called “Voice over LTE (VoLTE)” and “Voice over WiFi (VoWiFi),” customers benefit from improved voice quality and expanded network coverage via LTE and WiFi at no additional cost. Telefónica Deutschland will gradually implement the services across the individual brands and customer groups, and plans to have completed the process by the end of March 2018.

Mobility data, data analysis, big data – these terms are all rather abstract. With “So bewegt sich Deutschland” (How Germany moves), Telefónica NEXT has created an interactive map that takes the data and uses it to visualise nationwide traffic flows. The aim is to bring to life the findings for mobility and transport planning in Germany that cities, transport companies and other interest parties can obtain from anonymised mobile network data. Among other things, it includes regional insights on topics such as commuter behaviour and morning departure times for Hamburg, Berlin and Munich.

The measurements taken by users in the current network test of the consumer tech magazine COMPUTER BILD (issue 26 of December 9, 2017) confirm that the network performance of Telefónica Deutschland is stable despite the ongoing network integration.

A year ago, Telefónica Deutschland founded its subsidiary for data-based business models: Telefónica NEXT. Plenty has happened since then: The corporate start-up has now conducted data analyses for transport planning in five German cities, it is strengthening bricks-and- mortar retail and thus German city centres with its analytical expertise, and it has made the alpha version of its “Geeny” IoT platform for end-user applications available to developers and companies. Good ideas don't get older, only better: A year ago, Telefónica Deutschland unleashed mobile communications with O₂ Free. The aim was to give customers untroubled access to the digital world at any time and at a fair price – even if the high-speed data volume of their tariffs has been used up.

Telefónica Deutschland expands its mobile business portfolio, offering even more data volume starting 18 September. With up to 30 GB of monthly high-speed data volume, this leaves virtually no limits to working efficiently on the move. Effective of the same day, Telefónica Deutschland expands its portfolio by the new O₂ Business Basic tariffs for companies whose employees require only small amounts of data. The focus of the flexible voice tariff is on calls. Business customers can customize their O₂ Business Basic tariffs thanks to a wide range of options – from smartphones to extra data volume.

Telefónica Deutschland has reached an important milestone in the ongoing merger of the O₂ and E-Plus networks. The company has successfully completed the conversion of its GSM, UMTS and LTE networks to a uniform network identification.

In cooperation with Intraplan, a consultancy firm in the transport sector, Telefónica NEXT is now offering one of the most detailed data analyses for transport planning in Munich. The partners are calculating movement flows from anonymised mobile network data from Telefónica Deutschland. The related findings are intended as a comprehensive supplement to previous transport analyses.

Telefónica Deutschland has won the SABRE Award EMEA. At the award ceremony yesterday in London, the company was honoured in the category telecommunications for the campaign “Empowering the people through debate on digitalisation”. With the BASECAMP the company drives forward the public debate about digitization in Germany with diverse activities and well covered by the media.

From now on, Telefónica NEXT, the Telefónica Deutschland subsidiary focused on data-driven growth areas, will cooperate with Synergic Partners. The consulting company, which specialises in big data strategies, announced this at the Strata Data Conference yesterday in London. Through the cooperation Telefónica NEXT is comprehensively expanding its consulting services in the area of advanced data analytics.

Today, Telefónica Deutschland Holding AG successfully held its Annual General Meeting for the 2016 fiscal year at the Alte Kongresshalle in Munich. The Management Board highlighted the company’s achievements in the German telecommunications market as well as its progress towards becoming the OnLife Telco and reiterated its outlook for the year 2017.
