Telefónica Germany´s network is a central component for a positive customer experience and customers' mobile freedom.
Whether it's phone calls with family, friends and business partners or the use of digital applications such as music and video streaming, social media and mobile gaming - Telefónica Germany´s mobile network ensures reliable, high-performance networking in the everyday digital lives of millions of private and business customers. With around 28,000 locations spread across the whole of Germany, Telefónica Germany is able to provide the population with optimum mobile services. For example, Telefonica Germany reaches over 99 percent of the population with its fast 4G/LTE network. The 4G mobile communications standard enables all customers to use their digital applications on mobile devices such as smartphones at any time, even when they are on the move. In addition, Telefónica Germany is driving the expansion of the 5G mobile communications standard with massive investments: The company initially launched the 5G network in the five largest German cities of Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Cologne and Frankfurt in October 2020. Currently, 99 percent of the population already benefit from 5G (as of December 2025). By 2025, Telefonica Germany will provide the whole population throughout Germany with 5G. In doing so, Telefónica Germany is relying not only on the use of the powerful 3.6 GHz frequencies, but also on a mix of different and state-of-the-art technologies to further accelerate the rollout. Telefónica Deutschland will shut down the 2G mobile network standard (GSM) in the second half of 2028. The technology was developed more than 30 years ago primarily for voice calls and text messaging and has now reached the end of its lifecycle, which is why all German mobile network providers are discontinuing 2G service. The company will use the freed-up frequencies for 4G/LTE and 5G in the future. This will allow Telefónica Deutschland to create additional capacity for mobile voice calls, data usage, and connected applications. Further details are available on the respective brands’ websites and in the press release from Telefónica Deutschland.
