Telecommunications provider O₂ Telefónica is making rapid progress in its 5G network rollout and has reached an important milestone early: since June, the telecommunications provider has been providing 50 percent of the population with its fast O₂ 5G network.

Der Telekommunikationsanbieter O₂ Telefónica macht rasante Fortschritte im 5G-Netzausbau und erreicht frühzeitig einen wichtigen Meilenstein: Seit Juni versorgt der Telekommunikationsanbieter 50 Prozent der Bevölkerung mit seinem schnellen O₂ 5G-Netz. Damit hat O₂ Telefónica das eigene 5G-Ausbauziel für Ende 2022 schon jetzt erreicht.

Munich-based telecommunications provider O₂ Telefónica is launching its fast 5G network in the Munich subway. From now on, all O₂ customers with the appropriate tariff and device can use the modern 5G mobile communications standard in the entire subway network of the Bavarian capital. Whether on the daily commute to work or on the way to events such as soccer matches and the Oktoberfest - thanks to 5G, O₂ customers benefit from an improved network experience on all lines from U1 to U8. They have access to higher mobile data rates and more network capacity when they use music and video streaming or other digital applications while riding the subway.

Der Münchner Telekommunikationsanbieter O₂ Telefónica startet sein schnelles 5G-Netz in der Münchner U-Bahn. Ab sofort können alle O₂ Kund:innen mit entsprechendem Tarif und Endgerät den modernen 5G-Mobilfunkstandard im gesamten U-Bahn-Netz der bayerischen Landeshauptstadt nutzen. Ob auf dem täglichen Weg zur Arbeit oder unterwegs zu Events wie Fußballspielen und Oktoberfest – dank 5G profitieren O₂ Kund:innen auf allen Linien von der U1 bis U8 von einem verbesserten Netzerlebnis. Ihnen stehen höhere mobile Datenraten und mehr Netzkapazitäten zur Verfügung, wenn sie während der U-Bahn-Fahrt Musik- und Videostreaming oder andere digitale Anwendungen nutzen.

Am 21. und 22. Juni fand die connect conference in Dresden statt, das jährliche Branchenevent der Fachzeitschrift connect. O₂ Telefónica war als exklusiver Partner mit dabei. Insgesamt trafen sich rund 150 Vertreter:innen von Telekommunikationsanbietern, IT-Dienstleistern, Netzausrüstern und Startups vor Ort, um über die wichtigsten technologischen Entwicklungen im Mobilfunk und Festnetz zu diskutieren.

Ab sofort können O₂ Kund:innen den schnellen 5G-Mobilfunkstandard auch im europäischen Ausland nutzen. Ob beim Badeurlaub in Italien, beim Städtetrip durch Spanien oder einer Fahrradtour an der holländischen Nordseeküste – pünktlich zum Beginn der Sommerferien ermöglicht O₂ 5G Roaming in zehn europäischen Ländern. Die 5G-Nutzung ist ab sofort möglich in Spanien, Italien, Niederlande, Österreich, Schweiz, Belgien, Polen, Tschechien, Slowakei und Rumänien.

Der Bundesverband Glasfaseranschluss (BUGLAS) und der Telekommunikationsanbieter O₂ Telefónica haben sich auf einen Rahmenvertrag für den beschleunigten Ausbau der 5G-Infrastruktur in Deutschland geeinigt. Die Vereinbarung bietet eine optimale Grundlage, damit O₂ Telefónica und die BUGLAS-Netzbetreiber noch schneller und einfacher miteinander kooperieren können. Sie regelt für alle BUGLAS-Mitgliedsunternehmen die Rahmenbedingungen, um die 5G-Mobilfunkstandorte im O₂ Netz mit schnellen Glasfaserleitungen anzubinden.

The German Federal Association for Fiber Optic Connections (BUGLAS) and telecommunications provider O₂ Telefónica have agreed on a framework contract for the accelerated expansion of the 5G infrastructure in Germany.

Be it for major events, construction measures or crises caused by severe weather: O₂ Telefónica is now on the road throughout Germany with 60 new mobile radio stations. This enables the company to quickly and flexibly provide O₂ customers with additional 4G/2G capacities as well as powerful 5G on 3.6 GHz exactly where more network is needed.

The telecommunications provider O₂ Telefónica has reached an important milestone in its nationwide 5G network expansion offensive: currently, around 10,000 5G antennas are transmitting in the O₂ network. This means that O₂ is providing 5G to more than a third of the population.

O₂ Telefónica is taking the management of business customer solutions to the cloud: the telecommunications provider is launching a new cloud-based IT platform for the future-proof management and billing of its digital office and telecommunications solutions in the business customer segment (B2B). For this, the company relies on state-of-the-art software from MATRIXX, a leading provider of 5G converged charging solutions, running on the Google Cloud. Business customers benefit from near real-time billing processes and an optimized billing overview.

O₂ Telefónica hebt das Management von Geschäftskundenlösungen in die Cloud: Der Telekommunikationsanbieter startet eine neue cloudbasierte IT-Plattform für die zukunftssichere Verwaltung und Abrechnung seiner digitalen Büro- und Telekommunikationslösungen im Geschäftskundenbereich (B2B). Das Jahr 2022 startet bei O₂ / Telefónica Deutschland direkt mit einem Datenfeuerwerk: In der ersten Stunde des neuen Jahres schickten Kunden mit rund 382.000 Gigabyte so viele mobile Daten durch das O₂ Netz wie nie zuvor an Silvester. Das entspricht einer Steigerung von 35 Prozent im Vergleich zum Vorjahreszeitraum (283.000 GB Datenvolumen). Traditionell verschicken Kunden insbesondere in der ersten Stunde des neuen Jahres viele Glückwünsche per Instant Messaging Apps wie WhatsApp oder über Social Media-Kanäle wie Instagram und Facebook. Mit insgesamt 13,5 Millionen Telefonaten wurde in der Stunde nach Mitternacht auch mehr telefoniert als im Vorjahr.

The year 2022 starts directly with data fireworks at O₂ / Telefónica Deutschland: In the first hour of the new year, customers sent more mobile data through the O₂ network than ever before on New Year's Eve, with around 382,000 gigabytes. This represents an increase of 35 percent compared with the prior-year period (283,000 GB data volume). Traditionally, customers send many congratulations via instant messaging apps such as WhatsApp or via social media channels such as Instagram and Facebook, especially in the first hour of the new year. With a total of 13.5 million phone calls, more calls were also made in the hour after midnight than in the previous year.

Eine Mobilfunk-Ära geht zu Ende: O₂ / Telefónica wird am 30.12. die letzten 3G-Standorte im O₂ Mobilfunknetz abschalten und damit das Aus von UMTS (3G) in Deutschland besiegeln. Die freigewordenen Frequenzen bei 2.100 MHz, die O₂ bisher für 3G nutzte, werden komplett für den schnelleren und effizienteren 4G-Standard eingesetzt.

O₂ / Telefónica hat einen Meilenstein bei der Standardisierung und Steuerung von Netzwerkfunktionen erreicht. Der Telekommunikationsanbieter hat zusammen mit seinen Technologie-Partnern erstmals eine herstellerübergreifende SDN-Schnittstelle in seinem bundesweiten O₂ Mobilfunknetz geschaffen. Diese ist mit verschiedensten Richtfunksystemen kompatibel, sodass das Unternehmen Änderungen an seinen Richtfunkverbindungen einheitlich über alle Hersteller und nahezu in Echtzeit umsetzen kann.

O₂ / Telefónica has reached a milestone in the implementation and control of software defined network functions. For the first time, the telecommunications provider – together with its technology partners – has implemented a vendor-agnostic SDN interface in its nationwide O₂ network. This interface is compatible with a wide range of microwave systems, enabling the company to implement changes to its microwave links uniformly across all manufacturers and in near real time. O₂ / Telefónica is already using this innovative interface for all of the approximately 30,000 microwave links in the O₂ network, which are responsible for transporting data between mobile network sites and the next network node with capacities of up to 10 Gbit/s. Microwave complements fiber-optic services to transport large amounts of data over longer distances cost-effectively and efficiently over the air.

Driven by the 5G network rollout and Corona-related contact restrictions, German mobile communications is producing new records in telephony and data usage: the O₂ network breaks the 2 billion gigabyte barrier in data consumption per year for the first time. O₂ customers sent more mobile data through the network than ever before in the last eleven months from January to early December 2021.

Angetrieben durch den 5G-Netzausbau und Corona-bedingte Kontaktbeschränkungen hagelt es im deutschen Mobilfunk neue Rekordwerte bei der Telefonie und Datennutzung: Das O₂ Netz knackt erstmals die 2 Milliarden Gigabyte-Grenze beim Datenverbrauch pro Jahr.

Das O₂ Netz hat im renommierten connect Netztest das bisher beste Ergebnis in der Unternehmensgeschichte von Telefónica / O₂ erzielt. Das Fachmagazin zeichnete das O₂ Netz in diesem Jahr zum zweiten Mal in Folge mit der Note „sehr gut“ aus.

Im großen Mobilfunk-Netztest des SMARTPHONE Magazins sichert sich das O₂ Netz in diesem Jahr erstmals die Note „sehr gut“. Aufgrund der jüngsten Ausbauerfolge und enormen Steigerung in der Netzqualität rückt das O₂ Netz außerdem auf Platz 2 der besten deutschen Mobilfunkanbieter vor.

In SMARTPHONE magazine's major mobile network test, the O₂ network secured the grade "very good" for the first time this year. Due to the latest expansion successes and enormous increase in network quality, the O₂ network also moves up to second place among the best German mobile network providers. The O₂ network impressed in the test with strong performance in cities.

For the first time, O₂ is using an innovative "all in one" mobile communications antenna in its 5G network that supports all frequency bands and mobile communications standards. Currently, for example, network operators have to install additional 5G antennas to existing antenna systems on rooftops and cell towers for the 5G network rollout on 3.6 GHz. The new "all-in-one" antennas significantly simplify such upgrades and conversions of mobile network sites. They also reduce the space required as well as the overall weight of the setups and cut operating costs by around 30 percent.

O₂ setzt in seinem 5G-Netz erstmals eine innovative „All in one“-Mobilfunkantenne ein, die alle Frequenzbänder und Mobilfunkstandards unterstützt. Aktuell müssen Netzbetreiber zum Beispiel für den 5G-Netzausbau auf 3,6 GHz zusätzliche 5G-Antennen zu bestehenden Antennensystemen auf Hausdächern und Mobilfunkmasten installieren. Die neue „All in one“-Antenne vereinfacht solche Auf- und Umbauten von Mobilfunkstandorten deutlich. Sie reduzieren auch den benötigten Platz sowie das Gesamtgewicht der Aufbauten und senken die Betriebskosten um rund 30 Prozent. O₂ setzt die neuen „All in one“-Antennen des Netzausrüsters Huawei zunächst im Rahmen seines 5G Tech City-Projekts in München ein.
